This painting can be interpreted as a metaphor for a human’s journey towards higher learning, wisdom and enlightenment. The young man already has some accomplishment and learning indicated by the gold book he carries, and his skullcap tells of his dedication and commitment.

To reach the higher place not yet clearly visible from where he stands he must travel through terrain that although beautiful will contain many pitfalls and traps. The umbrella that he holds signifies the protection given him by that which wants him to succeed.
